Going from RGP to Toric Soft Lenses w/ Severe Myopia
Hi all,
I'm currently 21 years old and have been wearing RGP lenses due to my severe myopia (around -14 and 15 for glasses in both eyes) and astigmatism for about 10 years now with much success visually. They have corrected my vision to around 25/20 maybe even closer to 20/20 in both eyes. However, though I finally got used to them, I have always found them to be relatively uncomfortable, especially after wearing for an extended period of time (8+ hours).
My brother and mother who also both suffer from similar levels of severe myopia and astigmatism recently switched over from their RGP lenses to Biofit toric lenses and they LOVE them and claim that they see wonderfully and that they are so comfortable. Thus, I decided to jump on the bandwagon, and I just got mine today (Right Eye: -9, -2.25 x180 Left Eye:-9, 1.75 x 180.... -9 doesn't sound high enough but thats what it says on the contacts). Initially, they seemed pretty comfortable, however, I had some issues with my right eye being "blurry" at first/not quite settling. After wearing them for a few hours today, my vision seemed to be clearer, but not quite 'crisp' like with my other lenses. However, this is only the first day wearing the lenses and my eyes may not be used to them/may need to be adjusted (I'm going back in next week).
Basically, I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience switching over from RGP to soft lenses and how they felt about the switch? I know people always say that you generally see better with RGP lenses, especially those like me with severe myopia, but I really want to see well and have the comfort of the soft lenses. (plus, my mother who wore both hard and RGP lenses for decades LOVES the new Biofit toric lenses)
Any feedback is appreciated! -

I've also read that RGP lenses do provide crisper vision generally, and finally, I've learned the people quickly adapt to the rigid lenses, but it sounds to me like you never quite got used to it. Me personally, I'd rather put up with a slight blur than be aware of rigid contact lenses in my eyes all the time. It may not hurt, but I'd know they were there. If I were you I'd give the Biofit Toric lenses a little more time. As you probably know, toric lenses have to be on your eye a certain way; if they "tilt" you won't see clearly. Once you get used to that fact, things go much better.
Let us know what you decide and once you've posted some more, you can show us pictures of how good you look in your Biofit Toric or RGP lenses. - 07-08-2011, 06:42 AM#3

Hi Blondie48199, this is wonderful to read your post. I am new to this forum and have been looking for others with extreme myopia/astigmatism wearing/trying soft toric contacts. Just like you, I've worn RGP successfully for a long time (for me about 15 years), until recently, after I had kids, I reverted to my (high-index thin lens) glasses.
I now want to return to wearing contacts, but not to RGP and want to try soft lenses. but my eye doctor tells me that soft toric lenses are too prohibitively expensive (about $1,000). I'm wondering how much your Biofit toric lenses cost? And also if close-up vision (reading/computer work) is clear with these lenses?
My eyeglass prescription is less than yours, about -13 and -12.5 with astigmatism in both eyes.
Thanks for any comments. - 07-08-2011, 09:52 AM#4

Hi there Blondie48199, and welcome to Lens 101. I'm afraid I don't have experience with toric contact lenses, but I've been reading this site for a long time and I've learned that soft lenses are generally more comfortable than RGP lenses, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.
I've also read that RGP lenses do provide crisper vision generally, and finally, I've learned the people quickly adapt to the rigid lenses, but it sounds to me like you never quite got used to it. Competition
Personally Proclear Toric and Frequency Toric both by Coopervision I have found to be a great product to fit most toric clients. - 11-30-2011, 01:52 PM#12

Both are noted for their on-eye stability! AND they are also extremely comfortable lenses. - 11-30-2011, 04:05 PM#15
