I have an appointment on August 24th to get my eyes checked and see about getting contacts.
My question to everyone her who wears them is what brand do you use? What color/colors seem to help most? Do the contacts really help you a lot? Was it easy to get used to putting them in? Hard or soft lenses? And any other info you could give me would be awesome. Thanks so much...

In reply to Hi Nicole,
I can give you my sons' perspectives. My oldest has worn contacts for the past 3 - 4 years. He was the gas permiable (hard). They took him a little while to get used to, but have worked out wonderfully for him. They have slowed his nystagmus and helped his vision.
My youngest tried the hard lenses in May. Bless his heart he hung in there as long as he could. When we went for his follow up appts - his Dr. had to change the prescription (twice) and he could never get back in the swing of wearing them every day. The hard ones take a bit to get used to. My boys describe it as having something in your eye. Your eyelid actually has to get used to moving over it.
My youngest just got his first pair of "soft" lenses yesterday. Wore them for 6 hrs and couldn't believe the difference in feel between the hard and soft. The downside to the soft is that they will not help slow his nystagmus. At some point, as his Low Vision Specialist says, he will decide that if he wants the best vision possible, he will have to make the switch to hard lenses. However, she also warned us that she knows very few people who go from soft to hard. Right now his main motivation is getting out of his glasses. He's going into the 7th grade.
They are also very different in putting in and taking out. But either way, you'll get used to what you decide to wear.
Hope that helps somewhat.

In reply to Hi Dimitris, to answer your question, yes contacts can sometimes help with nystagmus. There are just so many factors to consider when deciding wheter or not contacts will work for you. The best advice is to make an appointment with an experienced doctor and explore all the possiblities.- Post Points: 5

In reply to Hi Nicole!
I hope the contacts work well for you! As a 46 year old albino woman, I have been wearing gas permeable contact lenses for exactly half of my life. At the age of 22 or 23, my ophthamologist finally informed me that they were finally able to put my prescription in contact lenses--up until that time my astigmatism was such that it could not be prescribed in any contacts. I jumped at the chance, even though some warned that I might have trouble with the lenses staying in place because of the nystagmus. Attitude regarding contacts is half of the battle. My brother, also an albino, won't try contact lenses, regardless, he can't stand anything near his eyes, even eye drops. I have had no problems, have only lost a couple, usual due to my own carelessness. When they were first prescribed, I had to have the prescription changed once because they were too strong--glasses prescriptions don't always translate to contacts exactly due to the lenses being closer to the eyes. My vision is not measureable better in the sense of what the ophthamologist can measure, but it is improved in what I can measure--I used to be frustrated by the area around my glasses- that doesn't exist. Also, my nystagmus has been slowed dramatically--I used to be called 'radar eyes' in school and teased because my head would wobble when I was focusing my eyes on something. This almost never happens anymore, and I used to be able to feel the wobbling! My lenses are light blue, more so that I can locate them than to filter light. However, with contacts, sunglasses are always an option, and stylish ones are more readily available. I also have reading glasses which I use for computer work and reading books, which I do a lot of. They are essentially what I use for a magnifying glass put into a pair of glasses--they have a focus point as do your regular prescription lenses. I never had any luck with reading glasses from the drug store, but these are my prize possession! They are wonderful over the contacts and free my hands from holding a magnifier when I wish to type or sew.
Contacts are not for everyone, albino or not. They are a personal choice, and if you really want them and they can be prescribed for your condition, than by all means go for it--you will likely be successful!
